Our Tikanga, Our Values

Our values are the essential qualities and beliefs that define who we are as a centre of learning. They're the principles we live by every day, shaping our behaviour, decisions, and relationships. These values reflect what matters most to us and what we stand for as a learning community, guiding how we work with tamariki (children), families (whānau), and each other.

  • At the heart of Giggles lies a deep commitment to Te Ao Māori, which weaves through every aspect of our curriculum and daily practices. We are guided by fundamental concepts that shape our approach: Wairua, the spiritual wellbeing and connections we nurture; Mauri, the recognition of the life force present in all things; Tapu, our respect for the sacred aspects of life and learning; Mana, our dedication to building and protecting each person's dignity and pride; and Whakapapa, our acknowledgment of the profound connections between people, place, and nature.

Throughout our year, we come together to celebrate significant events in the Māori calendar. Matariki brings us opportunities for reflection and new beginnings, our daily life is enriched through karakia to open and close our day, waiata that carry cultural knowledge through song, pūrākau that connect us to traditional local stories and wisdom, and tikanga that guides our cultural protocols and practices.

  • Giggles' role extends far beyond the walls of our building – we are active participants in our wider community. We foster deep, meaningful partnerships between tamariki, whānau, and kaiako, recognising that these relationships form the foundation of successful learning. The concept of tuakana-teina  (is a Māori concept where an older/experienced person teaches a younger/less experienced person, with both learning from each other) flows naturally through our environment, as older tamariki guide and support younger ones, creating a rich tapestry of peer learning and mentorship.

  • The learning community at Giggles is enriched by the diverse cultures that each whānau brings. We create an environment where cultural celebrations, traditions, and practices are woven into our daily experiences. Whānau are encouraged to share their cultural knowledge, languages, and experiences, creating a vibrant tapestry of learning opportunities. Through this sharing, tamariki develop a deep appreciation for different perspectives and ways of being in the world.

  • Learning at Giggles is a journey of discovery, where curiosity leads the way. We embrace the principle that teaching and learning flow both ways – our kaiako learn from tamariki just as tamariki learn from them. Through play and exploration, tamariki discover their interests and capabilities, while developing the skills and dispositions for lifelong learning. Cultural perspectives are naturally integrated into our teaching practices, enriching the learning experience for all.

  • Our role as kaitiaki extends to both the environment and the cultural heritage we hold. We nurture a deep respect for the natural world, teaching sustainable practices and environmental awareness. This connection to Papatūānuku (Mother Earth) and Ranginui (Father Sky) guides our approach to caring for our environment. We see ourselves as guardians not only of each tamaiti wellbeing and potential but also of the cultural traditions that will be passed on to future generations.

  • Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment is at the core of Giggles' practice. Through manaakitanga, we show care and respect for all members of our community. We celebrate the diversity of perspectives and experiences that each person brings, supporting and uplifting each other through our daily interactions. Kotahitanga guides us as we work together, ensuring that cultural protocols and practices are honored and respected.

  • Every tamaiti and whānau should feel they truly belong at Giggles. We create an environment where cultural identities are visible, valued, and celebrated. Through meaningful connections with our local community and strong foundations for learning, we help each tamaiti develop their sense of place and belonging. This sense of turangawaewae (sense of belonging) supports tamariki in developing confidence in who they are and where they come from.

  • At Giggles, our learning journey follows a natural cycle that draws from both contemporary education and Te Ao Māori. We begin with Titiro (Notice), carefully observing each tamaiti needs, interests, and cultural background. Through Whakaaro (Recognise), we come to understand their unique learning styles and cultural ways of knowing. Our Mahi (Respond) provides culturally appropriate support and opportunities, while Arotake (Revisit) allows us to reflect on and celebrate their growth and learning.

  • Giggles' commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi is expressed through three key principles. Through Partnership (Kotahitanga), we build authentic relationships with  local iwi and hapū, include whānau in decision-making, and seek guidance from cultural advisors.

Protection (Kaitiakitanga) sees us actively protecting and promoting te reo Māori, safeguarding tikanga Māori, and supporting cultural narratives and practices. Participation (Whakaurunga) ensures Māori have equal opportunities, celebrates Māori success as Māori, and includes Māori perspectives in all aspects of our planning and practice.

Te Ao Māori enriches every aspect of daily life at Giggles through the natural integration of te reo Māori, tikanga in our routines, recognition of local iwi history and stories, and our deep connection to the natural world. Together, these values create a learning environment where tamariki develop as confident, capable learners who are connected to their community and culture, while growing as global citizens grounded in the bicultural heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Our Tirohanga, Our Vision

Our vision is our aspirational goal - what we strive to achieve and what we want for tamariki. It's our picture of the future we're working to create, capturing our hopes and dreams for every tamaiti (child) who becomes part of our Giggles whānau (family). This vision guides our decision-making and inspires our daily practice.

“We are a community of learners, who strive to make a positive difference in each and every one of our children’s learning lives, now and into the future.”

- Giggles Whanau Kaiako Team
